Quality Marking
Quality Marking Tools
A "quality mark" is the little number or letters that are stamped into an article made of precious metal to indicate what metal and purity the item is made of.
.999FS Stamp
The .999FS quality marking stamp is used for fine silver. By law, this stamp can only be used to mark an item that is made entirely from .999 fine silver. Do not use this stamp to mark items that have sterling silver permanently attached. For items containing any amount of sterling silver, mark as sterling. If anything is soldered to a fine silver metal clay object or if anything sterling is fired in place, that item is no longer pure silver and can't be marked as such. For any fine silver item where sterling silver has been added, mark it as "sterling silver" or “.925”.
Sterling Stamp
The .925 quality marking stamp is used for sterling silver. By law, this stamp can only be used to mark an item that is made from .925 sterling silver. Argentium is sterling silver and can be marked ".925".
