Kiln Accessory - Digital Pyrometer

Although designed as a replacement pyrometer for Firefly manual kiln models, we use this pyrometer to check the accuracy of all of our kilns. As kilns age, temperatures can often read different than actual temps inside your kiln. Use this tool to measure the accuracy of your kiln to ensure you do not over or under fire your metal clay, glass or enamels.

The DT2-7 digital pyrometer measures kiln temperature for improved firing results. With the DT2-7 you can fire copper enameling, control the cooling rate of difficult glazes, or know when to begin monitoring glass in a switch-operated kiln. The liquid crystal display is easy to read even in bright daylight. This reliable hand-held pyrometer weighs only 5 ounces and measures in degrees F up to 1999°F. (To measure temperatures above 1999°F, order the degrees C meter version. The C meter version ships directly from the manufacturer and can take up to 2 weeks to ship via UPS) Replace the Type-K thermocouple in seconds with a simple plug-in connection. The on-off switch saves battery life. The plastic display case is rated for a room temperature of 32 – 122 degrees F.

Type-K thermocouple with 5’ of wire * Requires 9 volt DC battery * Battery life: 150 – 200 hours of continuous use * Low battery indicator message * Weight: 5 oz. * Warranty: 90 days

Pyrometer

"This has saved my work. My kiln temp was off by 50 to 100 degrees from what was displayed by kiln, the pyrometer helped me diagnose the problem, my thermocouple was not out far enough. I wasn't sure until I saw the results on the pyrometer. Took the guess work out of what was going wrong. Good tool to have on hand!"

Firefly Digital Pyrometer

"This is a necessary kiln accessory. I found out my kiln was off by 50 degrees, when it showed 1600 degrees, the pyrometer said 1550. Now if I want 1600, I set my kiln to 1650. Problem solved."

Kiln Pyrometer

"Very satisfied with this product. I’ve had one for many years, and it broke. Fortunate to find that Cool Tools carries the same exact one. Love Cools Tools."

Will work

"I waited the required three weeks for this kiln and when it arrived it was missing a small accessory part. The door is assembled a little crooked. it is about a quarter of an inch off .It will still work , and every day I will be reminded to pay attention to the details and not be sloppy like this door."

Must Have to Calibrate

"This pyrometer is essential for kiln calibration. Having problems with pieces not sintering or blistering? Chances are your kiln is firing hotter or colder than the display and a pyrometer will tell you exactly how much to adjust. Kilns also change over time so testing every year is important. This pyrometer works great because you can put the thermometer right into the vent hole."

Glad to have a kiln that fires to 2300 degrees! Wish the readout temp was more accurate.

"I like almost everything about this kiln except the temperature accuracy! Perhaps it is only this kiln but it seems to fire approx 100 degrees higher above 1600 degrees than the read out shows. I've done several pyrometer testings and compared them to the read out. Now that I know that, I can adjust the temperature to reflect the difference. Alan at Cool Tools supported me in this process and I can only thank him for his attention, suggestions and help. Cool Tools Customer Service is wonderful! Paragon has also been responsive. I just wish the accuracy of the readout temps on the digital control panel were more accurate. I ordered this kiln with 3 inch bricks instead of the 2- 2 1/2 " bricks so I could have up to 2300 degree firing temp. I may never need that much but I have it!"

Q&A

how do I use this pyrometer?
Hi Bronwyn, the probe of the pyrometer is inserted through the vent hole plug on the top of the kiln. If your kiln does not have a vent hole plug, you would need to drill a hole to place the probe through. Hope this helps!
