Art Clay Copper

Art Clay Copper is a clay material that can make a wide range of pieces such as jewelry, craft designs, and objects like sculptures and models. Art Clay Copper can be fired in an electric kiln without using carbon, with the resulting fired piece being 100% pure copper. Art Clay Copper is a water-based clay, and dries naturally in the air. To avoid drying, when starting your piece, use the amount needed to make your desired piece, and store the rest in a clay hydrator.

Product Tips

After opening your package of clay, the surface of Art Clay Copper will naturally start oxidizing and the color will darken if left in the air. If you see a darkened surface, scrape off the darkened layer and use the internal clay to make your piece.

After firing in the kiln, the surface layer of the piece will oxidize similar to soldered sterling silver. You will need to take away the oxidized surface with pickling solution such as powder-form pickling compound to obtain a pure copper color.

After firing, take out the fired piece with tweezers or tongs from the kiln, and quench immediately with water, so that most of the oxidized layer which occurs during firing will peel off. Work in a well ventilated area. Wear safety glasses. For your safety, immediately place a fiber cloth over the piece. The oxidized layer on the surface will fracture and at times small pieces can fly into the air.

To make paste, apply a small amount of distilled water to some soft clay or the ground powder of dry clay, and blend well while crushing and blending in any hard pieces. Use this paste for filling up any cracks in the dried clay of your piece, and for joining clay parts.

After firing and the oxidized surface is removed, the piece is now pure copper. You can enjoy its beautiful metal luster by polishing with a metal brush, burnisher, polishing points and a tumbler.

Easy To Use, Easy To Fire * Love It!

"This torch fire-able copper clay is wonderfully easy to use. After drying for 24 hours, it's also easy to fire following simple directions. This is the only copper clay I love to use for my weird designs. What's even more wonderful is that it's super affordable!"

I like it but. . .

"I've used this copper clay for a while now. I am brand new to metal clays and I used this copper clay second, after trying Phoenix Torch FS, which was a disaster for me. Coming from that experience, I loved this clay. It was so easy to work with. It was very smooth and creamy. I made a lot of things. First I torch fired because that was how I had planned to work. The initial pieces broke easily and it was all very disappointing. So, I tried kiln firing next. I had a much better result this way. The fired copper is very bendy and I was able to roll a finished piece into a tube but when pressed to go past that it broke. That was fine as I was testing it. One of my pieces developed a bubble during firing. The clay was bone dry when I put it in the kiln as I dried it on a warmer for an hour then let it air dry another 2 days. Maybe it was air bubble? I don't know. But since then, being cautious of air bubbles, I have had 2 more pieces develop a bubble. Now this may be something I'm doing wrong so I won't take off a star for that. Something to note though, is that due to the shrinkage and the firescale that develops, your pieces get very thin. I was rolling to a 3 but now I roll out to a 4 or 5 depending on what I am doing with the finished product. I don't have this issue with silver. Just a heads up. I do like working with this clay better than the silver I tried but I'm not 100% sold on it. I may try the Cyprus Copper just to see how it works for me. But I do like this clay. My pics are of pieces I made to learn to enamel and patina and to show the bubbles in the finished pieces. I can still use them for that even with the bubbles."
