Dimensional Firing Bundle

This bundle is designed to to give dimensional pieces support during firing to prevent flat spots, slumping, or collapse. This bundle includes a 4" high-temperature fused silica firing dish, alumina hydrate firing media, vermiculite firing media, and a Superwool fiber blanket. The media cradles items needing support during firing. Beads, domes and other 3-dimensional or hollow items need support during firing to avoid flat spots, slumping or collapse.

Alumina hydrate is made from aluminum sulfate and sodium carbonate. Alumina hydrate is used in the ink and paint industry as a colorant and in the cosmetic industry as a colorant and filler. Alumina hydrate has a sandy or powdered texture which some prefer over the coarser texture of vermiculite. Please note: Alumina hydrate is a dust so wearing a mask is recommended when handling.

Vermiculite is a mineral that breaks down as it is heated into worm-like accordion shaped pieces that make a most wonderful media for firing metal clay objects.

Super Fine Vermiculite is perfect for firing with EZ960® Sterling Silver Clay. When firing EZ960 pieces that require support, we recommend using either alumina hydrate or vermiculite that is crushed to a very small, fine consistency prior to firing.

Superwool HT Fiber Blanket is the safer option for cradling beads and other objects that require support in the kiln. It is a flexible, easy to use, environmentally friendly insulating material. The Superwool blanket has excellent thermal stability and does not contain binder or lubricant. It will not emit any fume or smell during the first firing. This material will maintain its original soft fibrous texture up to the maximum continuous use temperature. This material can be heated to a maximum continuous use temperature of 2,372°F / 1,300°C.

Note: Superwool
has been exonerated from any carcinogenic classification under note Q of directive 97/69 EC European Union. It is non-toxic, and testing has shown that any fiber that might be breathed in and reach the lungs are rapidly removed. This characteristic is referred to as low biopersistence. As a consequence fibers do not accumulate in the lung.

Before firing metal clay in your firing dish, pre-fire the media and the dish alone to 1650°F (no hold).
