Firing Media - Activated Carbon Coconut Shell

This activated, acid-washed coconut carbon is recommended for use with all base metal clays (not just Hadar's). This carbon has been tested by and recommended by Hadar Jacobson, especially for her Hadar's Clays. Unlike other carbons, this carbon produces very little ash, heats evenly, does not overheat, and does not interfere with the sintering of the clay.

This carbon can also be used to protect stones when firing any type of metal clay.

Coconut shell activated carbon is a totally natural, environmentally friendly product, that has a very small carbon foot print, since it is derived from coconut shells.

Great firing media.

"I use it for the second stage of firing Aureus Bronze. Excellent results!"

I've been using this carbon

"I've been using this carbon for years. Be sure to prime it - if you don't you'll have carbon and pits in your finished pieces. Please don't ask me how I know that. . ."

Did not work well for me

"I know a lot of people rave about this coconut carbon, but I did not have a good experience with it. First, the bag was open inside the box, and there was loose carbon all over the place. I’m not sure how much I lost. It is true that it produces almost no ash, but the reason is because the carbon is in big, coarse, sharp chunks. This did not work well with bronze, which dents easily when the temp is even 5F too hot. Regular carbon leaves very tiny dents, this carbon leaves huge scratches. It looked like my cat sharpened his claws on my bronze pieces. So I thought I would use it for copper instead. Well, it responded strangely to the higher temperature, and the carbon bonded to my copper pieces. All the carbon touching the copper pieces got copper plated and stuck to the piece, therefore ruining those ones too. I have used many coconut carbons on the market, and this was my least favorite so far. It was too much drama for me."

Cool Tools Clay Hydrator

"I so far have 4 of these hydrators. The clay stays fresh for months. I keep them out of the sun and use distilled water to keep the sponges moist. Don't know what I would do without one for every type of clay I use. I highly recommend this product!"

The Best!

"It works perfectly with Hadar's clays, but I don't know why you couldn't use this for all your carbon needs."
