Silver Clay Firing Support Dishes & Media
Choose Dish AND/OR Media from dropdown separately
Choose a high-temperature fused silica firing dish filled with your choice of firing media. The media cradles items needing support during firing. Beads, domes and other 3-dimensional or hollow items need support during firing to avoid flat spots, slumping or collapse.
Make Sure to Choose Vermiculite or Alumina Hydrate as a Media!
Vermiculite is a mineral that breaks down as it is heated into worm-like accordion shaped pieces that make a most wonderful media for firing metal clay objects.
Alumina hydrate is made from aluminum sulfate and sodium carbonate. Alumina hydrate is used in the ink and paint industry as a colorant and in the cosmetic industry as a colorant and filler. Alumina hydrate has a sandy or powdered texture which some prefer over the coarser texture of vermiculite. Please note: Alumina hydrate is a dust so wearing a mask is recommended when handling.
Before firing metal clay in your firing dish, pre-fire the media and the dish alone to 1650°F (no hold).
Super Fine Vermiculite is perfect for firing with EZ960® Sterling Silver Clay. When firing EZ960 pieces that require support, we recommend using either alumina hydrate or vermiculite that is crushed to a very small, fine consistency prior to firing.

I fire almost everything in this vermiculite
"This is my go-to for firing pieces in a kiln. One thing - it's not meant to fill spaces, because it won't necessarily shift out of the way when a piece shrinks, and can cause denting inside spaces (inside ring shanks, carved out spots, etc.)."

Q&A
- Can these bowls be used with all metal clays (copper, bronze, etc.)? Do they last longer than the stainless steel, which I understand break down fairly rapidly? It says to choose your media, but then gives only two choices: vermiculite or Alumina Hydrate. I'm assuming coconut is out? How long do the suggested media last...how many firings can they survive before needing replacing? Is there a video that describes their use?
- Hi Barb, some artists use these dishes for base metal clays and carbon; however we do not recommend this as it does not distribute the heat as well as stainless steel firing containers. Vermiculite and Alumina Hydrate are to be used in these dishes for pieces that require support. They can be used over and over again. - Can I fit a dish with "filling" and a bead on one kiln shelf and still have room for a second dish with contents on a second shelf in a Paragon SC3?
- Hi Kim, these dishes are only about 1.5" high, so yes, with the proper kiln posts (2") you would be able to stack them inside the SC3 with a dish on each shelf.
